Morocco Coastal Hazard

One of the coastal hazards that Morocco has and could face again is tsunamis. In past history Morocco was faced with a major devastating earthquake that took many lives (Agadir 1960). The location of the country increases its vulnerability due to the increased probability of tsunami resulting from potential earthquake. The prevention method I think that should be put in place is a defensive tsunami wall. Also a vulnerability map will be useful to help plan and prevent the onset of a tsunami. This will help reduce the impact to the land.  Morocco has already developed a forecasting and flood warning system. Morocco plans to create a National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.

  1. Thanks for posting, living on the Monterey peninsula myself on the coast reading this chapter on coastal hazards was kind of a wake up call. I actually just watched "The Impossible" movie that was based around a Tsunami hitting a coastal area, getting a visual representation of how things can go down in that situation changes the way I look at these types of events. I think any measures taken to protect against collateral damage would be great but I would be interested to see what effects such structures have had on tourism. It sounds like they are heading in the right direction as far as prevention and detection. Great Post!

  2. My country, Haiti, is also at risk for tsunamis. This is because of the earthquakes that occur in that area. They suffered multiple small tsunamis after the big earthquake in 2010.

  3. My country Fiji has very low risk of tsunamis, however, my country has a huge erosion problem which has increased the risk of flooding even more, so I can understand the effort the country has to put in order to prevent tragedies like a tsunami. Fiji is at a low risk for tsunami, but that does not mean they are vulnerable. If the sand in Fiji keeps eroding, the chances of people surviving a tsunami in Fiji would be low.
