Week 5 Volcanoes

Morocco really doesn’t have many earthquakes so the volcano activity is dormant at the moment. With the low activity of earthquakes this country has the volcano activity is none existence in that region at this time. This country hasn’t seen much of any activity since the big earthquake in Agadir many years ago so therefore volcanic activity is at rest. There is an article that mentions mud volcanoes off the coast of Morocco. These mud volcanoes have been suspected but not active. The first one discovered was offshore of Moroccan margin in the Gulf of Caldiz. The Gulf of Caldiz is located along the African-Eurasian plate boundary. As for any active volcano activity in Morocco or the nearby countries such as Spain and Portugal, there isn’t any to report at this moment.

  1. Interesting enough, I was offshore a few years back surveying that area and was part of a team that found the first evidence of gas seepage and mud volcanoes...(link). These volcanoes expel cold fluids containing mud, saline water and/or gases expelled from a pressurized deep source upwards through structurally controlled conduits...pretty cool!!! Although we do have the technology to discover them, I am not aware of any program to monitor their activity. It seems they are treated like a scientific item and not a current hazard.

  2. Africa has such a wide variety of climates, and many of them so extreme, its a nice change of pace to read that an area probably doesnt have to worry about volcanic activity for the time being. I studied some mud volcanoes in the caribean last year while piloting an ROV, they were very interesting to explore. Great post!
